In just his third game back since spraining an ankle on Dec. 14, Dallas star Luka Doncic went down hard in the first half of Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. Doncic was fouled on a drive to the basket and fell hard to the court leaving Mavericks fearing the worst.
Doncic remained in the game to sink his two free throws but immediately went to the locker room late in the second quarter of Sunday’s 108-95 loss to the Lakers. The Mavs’ leading scorer hit his head on the court when he fell and was in concussion protocol briefly.
The Dallas medical and training staff gave Doncic the okay to return to play in the second half. He wound up with 19 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Those numbers are well off his season averages of 29.1 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 9.1 assists; but the best news for Dallas is that their star is healthy.
Doncic left a Dec. 14 game against Miami after spraining his ankle and missed the Mavericks next four games before returning the day after Christmas. Dallas went 2-2 without Doncic and had won two straight since his return before Sunday.
The second-year pro scored 24 points in a win over San Antonio and recorded a triple-double – 31 points, 12 rebounds, 15 assists – in a 141-121 win over Golden State on Saturday.
The 95 points scored on Sunday was a season-low for the Mavs. Dallas (21-11) returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 31, when the team travels to Oklahoma City. It is the first meeting of the season between the Mavs and Thunder.
