Looking at the final score, it appears the Dallas Mavericks fought hard and battled one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference on Saturday night. The Mavs lost 122-118 in overtime to the Miami Heat. The bigger loss was MVP candidate Luka Doncic.
Early in the game’s opening quarter, Doncic, last year’s Rookie of the Year, stepped on Kendrick Nunn’s foot on his way to the basket. With 10:20 left in the first quarter, Doncic made his way to the locker room for evaluation. Shortly thereafter, he was ruled out of the game.
It’s a sprained ankle for Doncic who was averaging 30.4 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 9.3 assists per game this season. The Dallas star was X-rayed and the results were negative. How long Doncic will be out remains unknown.
Doncic had scored at least 20 points, had five rebounds, and five assists in 20 straight games. That streak came to an end on Saturday. The only player in NBA history with a longer such streak was the legendary Oscar Robertson.
The Mavs star also leads the NBA in triple-doubles with eight so far this season. In Thursday’s win over the Detroit Pistons, Doncic scored 41 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and dished out 11 assists.
Dallas is currently third in the Western Conference standings at 17-8. The loss of Doncic couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time for the Mavericks. Saturday’s loss to Miami is the first of five straight games against Eastern Conference powers. Over the next eight days, Dallas will face Milwaukee, Boston, Philadelphia, and Toronto.
